Mumbai city's weather doesn’t allow for one to sport thick, tough fabrics. Even in the so-called winter that should be upon us soon. But that doesn’t mean that materials like wool, suede and leather are better left on the racks. The latter, especially, has always helped to make a bold fashion statement, and it’s a trend that many designers have been advocating for a while.
Says designer Rajat Tangri, "Leather injects a strong sense of character into a simple look. What’s more is that it is extremely versatile — from grunge or biker chic to edgy, elegant and sophisticated, there are many ways to style it."
Dress the part
Leather skirts are a particular favourite this season. From pencil skirts and minis to skater versions, there are several styles to choose from. "They look super sexy. Dark colours always work well, but experiment with fun hues for a fresher look," says designer Ritika Bharwani. This is also a great time to give the leather dress a go. Not brave enough? Bharwani suggests picking one with leather accents and highlights.
Top of the game
Leather tops — especially peplum ones — are a winning way to update your look too. "They make for a great style statement. The trick is to allow your top to stand out by keeping the rest of your look simple," says Tangri.
Contrary to popular opinion, a leather jacket in the city’s elusive winter is not a total no-no. Fashion blogger and entrepreneur Masoom Minawala is quick to endorse this trend. "Opt for lighter leather jackets. Instead of black, experiment with pastels shades, pink or tan, and wear them over a flowy dress or a crop top. Paired with skinny jeans, leather vests promise a rock chic look," she says.
Playing with pants
A classic favourite, leather pants, allow one to transition from day to night effortlessly. Tangri advises, "First decide whether you want to go for genuine leather, which is expensive and difficult to maintain, or faux leather, which is wallet-friendly. Wear it with a simple blouse and heels for maximum impact."
For those who still continue to be wary of the material, accessories come to the rescue. "Leather is generally associated with a punk look, but that’s not always the case," says accessory designer Ashni Shah of Aaddict. "A leather bib embellished with coloured crystals or a brightly embroidered leather cuff add sophistication to the outfit. For those who prefer a boho-glam vibe, leather neckpieces accentuated with feathers, are the perfect match," she adds. And while it is definitely wise to give knee-length leather boots a complete miss, combat boots and ankle-length booties shouldn’t be ruled out.
