Want a dose of some seriously wacky, sadomasochistic style of fashion in your wardrobe? Then just look at the dangerously sexy cult trend the fashion savvy celebs in Hollywood are sporting this season. Metal spikes, rivets and pointy buttons everything that can be associated with biker chic is now being touted as the new feminine fashion.

Burberry showcased a collection of spiky dresses that may look uncomfortable to wear but give a definite edge to the wearer. Soon after, spike dresses were seen on Lady Gaga, actor Olivia Wilde, singer Fergie to socialite Kim Kardarshian. Recently at an event in London, actor Kate Bosworth caught everyone’s attention when she wore a Burberry creation, where the skirt was ornamented with metal spikes.

Designer Jyotee Khaitan says, “Metal spikes look great especially on jackets and shoes as it lends that X factor look where one can stand out in the crowd. It has become a huge international rage and anyone who has a lot of attitude and confidence can try the look.”

Punk inspired
If you want to add a bit of punk to your dressing style, spikes should be the statement that can give you the desired look. “The metal spikes are significant part of punk culture or rock stars and these metal studs or metal spikes are ruling fashion. But don’t get carried away with this eye-catching trend; anything too much is bad. Too much of spikes can ruin the whole look,” says designer Shantanu Singh.

Different looks
There are so many interesting ways of wearing the spiked look. “It’s a great look to wear as a hair accessory, or on a power-shouldered dress or on the shoulder blade or as a waist belt. The different looks to this could be wearing a gunji or a plain tee with a spiked mini skirt,” says designer Kapil Arora.

Get the look right

In vogue:
Metal spikes should be used on parts of jackets or waist coats as a highlighting factor, and look best when these are worn over shirts teamed with fitted leather trousers or tights.

Use them as highlighters: Only one area should be highlighted. It could be the neck, shoulder, waist or sleeve. Anything excess can ruin the look.

Accessorise: Don’t go for too many accessories with this look. Try out a ring with spikes, or brogues or a nice sling bag to accessorise the spiked outfit. Do not make the mistake of pairing any bling with the look.

The big No Nos: Remember to keep the look subtle. The overall look should be chic yet minimalistic. People who have broad shoulders should always avoid spikes on shoulders.

Makeup: Keep your makeup simple and minimal. Don’t go for flashy makeup because the spikes themselves are catchy enough to fetch you attention. Loud makeup will make the look very wannabe.
