Actress Deepika Padukone wore a sexy black gown with thigh-high slits to an awards function in February. Kareena Kapoor was seen in a similar design at a fashion event recently. Hollywood star Jennifer Aniston bared toned thighs in her black-slit gown at the Golden Globes awards in January and at the ongoing Cannes Film Festival actresses Kate Beckinsale, Salma Hayek, Cheryl Cole and Rachael Weiz sported the trend on the red carpet.
However, sexy as the thigh-high slit gown seems to be, fashion bloggers and designers are not impressed. “These gowns are fashionable but they will never invade the wardrobe of a common person. Such gowns could only work on the red carpet,” says designer Neeta Bhargava.
“You have to have a model’s figure to carry it off. Besides, a gown is vintage and has a trademark grace to it. The slit just spoils it,” says fashion stylist Ranjunee Chamka.
“A miniskirt is so much less obvious. This is overtly sexual, and flashes of skin should be more subtle,” says fashion blog Daily Style. “I call this a TooToo dress. It’s too low-cut and too high-cut,” says blog Second City Style.
Designer Niki Mahajan does not agree with the critics. “So what if it is vintage. The slit adds drama and femininity , if you have a body then show it off. Though, I would ask people with a Beyonce, Vidya Balan or Rani Mukherjee-structure to stay away from them.”
