It’s that time of the year when fashion becomes the buzzword in the Capital. Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) kicks off today at Pragati Maidan, and will see 113 designers showcasing their collections on the runway and through exhibits.
While there is a constant debate and curiosity over celeb presence at the five-day fashion event, this time, it looks like that the focus will be on the designs. Nevertheless, Bollywood will will make its presence felt.
Masaba Gupta’s show today will see young actor Alia Bhatt take over the ramp, and cricketer Irfan Pathan among the audience. “Alia was my choice and muse because the collection is very young and is about girls who aren’t afraid of embracing their sporty side,” Masaba told us. Alia on the other hand says she had an emotional reason to be on the ramp this time around. “I have known Masaba since I was a child. Can’t wait to walk for her,” she says. On attending her show, Irfan told us, “I am excited to watch fashion which is quirky, and for the show, I’ll wear an unconventional jacket.”
Actor Mugdha Godse will also be on the runway as the showstopper for designer duo Paras and Shalini. “Our collection, which is younger and bolder than before, is all about having fun ... and Mugdha does full justice to our creations this time,” says Paras. For the Ministry of Textiles show, in support of handlooms, actor Gulshan Grover will attend designer Samant Chauhan’s showcase. “Weaves in Bhagalpuri silk and silk -cotton will make up the collection,” reveals Samant.
Amid the starry presence at the fashion week, when we again raised the question of celeb power vs standalone creations on the runway, Sunil Sethi, president FDCI, told us, “It’s all about the business of fashion, and the designers are the real stars for us. But, at the same time, designers are welcome to get on to the runway their muse or someone who suits the collection’s personality.”
