Madhuri Dixit’s latest fashion experiment has dented her popularity. Last week, Mads, 44, ditched her usual saris and anarkalis for a black, low-back sleeveless gown at a glam fashion event held in Mumbai. However, the actor’s western makeover fell flat with style critics, who felt the dress was unflattering, as it made her look bulky.
“Gowns look lovely on women who have super toned stomachs. Madhuri is clearly not in that category,” says designer Anupama Dayal. “She just doesn’t look confident. She is slightly bigger on the hips and that doesn’t work on a gown,” says designer Rohit Gandhi. “She should have stuck to Indian wear, as that is what flatters her,” says designer Rina Dhaka.
Her look has come under attack online too. “Whatever happened to ageing gracefully? She looks way gorgeous in saris, she should stick to that,” said a user on the entertainment site, Pinkvilla.com. However, designer Varun Bahl, who has designed for Madhuri in the recent past, defended her western choice. “She can look good in fusion and even cleverly styled western wear,” he says.
