Her daughter Lourdes may be coming into her own fashion spotlight, but folks still poll the lady who sang Vogue as the ultimate style icon of the 1980s.
A recent British poll judged singer Madonna’s fashion contribution as being the most significant, outweighing fellow ’80s icons supermodel Jerry Hall and Blondie lead singer Debbie Harry.
“One in three British women say stonewash denim was one of the best trends to come out of the ’80s and it has definitely made a comeback of late — although in a revamped design from its original form,” said the spokeswoman for the company that conducted the poll.
Fashion designer Narendra Kumar’s recent collection for a denim brand featured jeans in eclectic washes, too.
He says, “Stonewash denim was the most popular wash in the ’80s. Cindy Lauper, Madonna and Tina Turner in Mad Max made those looks popular and they were inspirations for my collection. But the newer washes are not as heavily done; they are meant to look a little more engineered and subtle.”
While the ’80s is a major influence in denim right now, clean and easy washes that are not too loud work better with the youth today. The loud variants have been rejected by the market. Other style staples of the ’80s are big sleeves with shoulder pads and loose kaftan dresses.
