From Neha Dhupia’s recent IIFA appearance to Katrina Kaif’s movie promotions, there’s one print that’s been making a comeback of sorts. The retro polka dot, in all its avatars, seems to be flooding the red carpet and invading celebrity wardrobes.
According to designer Nachiket Barve, it’s no surprise that the style is already piquing interests. “In India especially, trends tend to be happy accidents. In this case, if some celebrities are photographed wearing a particular style, it immediately becomes a trend.”
Designer and stylist Masaba Gupta says, “It’s the first style that comes to mind when you say the word retro. It’s also popular because it’s very feminine.”
She advises sticking to matching a polka dot garment to another solid colour. “Don’t mix it with another print,” Masaba says, adding, “Also, if you’re wearing a polka dot dress which can be very chic, make sure the hemline is below the knees or it can look cheesy.” Barve chimes in, saying, “It’s important to keep in mind the scale of the dot. The pattern works best on slim people because it emphasises volume. Curvier women can wear it as an accent on garments or as an accessory like a scarf.”
