The big cover up
Is the black jacket a new red carpet favourite or a safe way to pep up a staid look? We ask our fashion experts to rate Keira Knightley, Rachel Bilson, Sameera Reddy and Anushka Sharma who were seen in their black jackets.fashion and trends Updated: Oct 20, 2010 01:28 IST
In the recent past fashionistas were seen giving the formal black jacket a high voltage glam make over. Celebs like Keira Knightley and Rachel Bilson were seen pairing their black jackets with party frocks while desi girls Sameera Reddy and Anushka Sharma wore theirs over slim pants.
So with the black jacket emerging as the hot fall season favourite at formal dos, we ask three fashion experts — super model Sapna Kumar; fashion designer Atsu Sekhose and stylist Meghna Bhalla, to decode the style of the celebrities and rate their looks on our fashion barometer.
Anushka Sharma- wore a fitted jacket with rolled up sleeves at a film premiere in MumbaiSapna Kumar [3/10]
I’m not very keen on this look. The jacket is passable and everything else is rather drab. The shoes are really not nice and the open hair isn't very flattering either.
Atsu Sekhose [3/10]
She has a good body and the potential to look stunning. Even though it doesn’t look bad on her, I feel the ensemble she is sporting is boring. Maybe better accessories would have done the trick. Considering she is at a movie premiere, I definitely think she could do better than this.
Meghna Bhalla [4/10]
The jacket here does the needful and gives her otherwise drab ensemble a bit of spunk; however, I do think the jacket would have worked better with a buttoned-up collared shirt and high waist flared trousers. The structure of this jacket is pretty versatile so I do consider it a good buy.
Sameera Reddy- wore a wrap around belted jacket at a couture fashion show in Mumbai
Sapna Kumar [6/10]
The lady looks collected and elegant without looking like she's trying too hard. She’s well groomed and does justice to the jacket.
Atsu Sekhose [8/10]
I'm pleasantly surprised to see her in this look, one would expect Sameera to wear a strapless cocktail dress on an occasion like this. Her choice of contrast colour shoes accentuates the whole look. It’s fully covered, yet the way the jacket is cut makes her look very slim and hot too.
This jacket matches the trousers perfectly and makes Sameera look quite stately. I have a feeling that this jacket has limited uses. However, it creates a strong impression.
Keira Knightley- wore a tweed jacket at the Chanel Paris Fashion Week show
Sapna Kumar [7/10]
I really like her look. Nice dress and shoes. The jacket makes it look casually cool. Slick hair. She looks well put together.
Atsu Sekhose [8/10]
I love her hairstyle!! The dress is very cute and even the jacket looks great with the dress. The proportions are just right. The Chanel sling bag completes the whole look. She is a stunner and looks good in anything.
Keira looks pretty with this ensemble and stays safe. What I like is, that the jacket allows the dress to be the hero of the look. Having said this, I must add, that the jacket also doesn’t make its presence felt in the sense that it doesn’t enhance her get up. Should she choose to take it off, I’m not sure if it will be missed at all.
Rachel Bilson- wore leather jacket at the Chanel Paris Fashion Week show
Sapna Kumar [4/10]
I do not like her look at all. It is a strange looking dress. The jacket looks a trifle messy. Nice shoes and bag though.
Atsu Sekhose [2/10]
Somehow I don’t get this look. It’s really confusing and personally, I hate this biker-chic meets rocker meets country-girl look. The shoes are unflattering and shorten her petite frame even more.
This waterfall-lapel leather jacket actually manages to attract some eye-balls. I think it was a good idea to team this sort of a utility jacket with a very girly outfit. This leather jacket can add instant luxe to any ensemble.
