The Hunger Games, the reel adaptation of author Suzanne Collins’ young-adult trilogy, is not really the kind of film you would expect to spur a fashion revolution. But the film that has smashed US box office records, has also got everyone raving about its costumes and trends.
Set up in a dystopian world, a resplendent Capitol contrasted by an impoverished District 12, the film treats fashion lovers with a smorgasbord of style that ranges from Lady Gaga-esque haute couture to the utilitarian, vintage work-wear. Costume designer Judianna Makovsky used designs by Rodarte, Alexander McQueen and Jean Paul Gaultier for the film. While the Capitol escort Effie Trinket (actor Elizabeth Banks) dons outlandish pieces, Katniss Everdeen (actor Jennifer Lawrence) sports military-inspired jacket and combat boots. We put together the most interesting trends sparked off by the film.
Film’s character Effie is spotted in high heels throughout the movie. For the reaping ceremony, her outfit included ‘faithful’ golden heeled booties from Alexander McQueen. “The higher the heel the better,” reads Effie’s profile on the film website. “I just love love love dropping by the City Circle in my perspex-heeled metallic booties!” She’s also seen wearing “coal” black pair of grosgrain peep-toes and hot-pink open-toed
gladiator heels in the film.
Pink is hot
Effie’s most talked-about outfit is the fuchsia jacket teamed with a bum-hugging pencil skirt. To get the similar look, opt for a tailored fuchsia jacket with 1980’s-inspired puffy sleeves and fitted knee-length pencil skirt. Over-sized flower accessory would spice up the look. You can check out Trendy Divva in City Square Mall, and Accessorize at Moments Mall in Kirti Nagar for similar outfits. Effie’s bright well-defined lips, false eye lashes are also a rage. To get the look, use a lighter shade of foundation or powder. For lips, line and fill in with red lip colour and pat with gold dust or colour in the center.
Caviar nails and more
The elaborately done nails, embellished with caviar-inspired beads are another highlight of Effie’s look. Stylist Linda Flowers was quoted in an interview saying, “Effie’s manicure took 45 minutes a day to apply and she had different nails to match each of her six outfits.” Beauty brand China Glaze has launched 12 shades of cool The Hunger Games-inspired nail paints — agro, fast track, ashes, etc.
Effie’s funky wigs
Effie’s outlandish, coloured wigs have got everyone talking about them. “I wanted to keep her classic but contemporary, so first I created a ’30s-inspired finger wave bob, brushed it out, then I layered in a few fuzzy pieces for more texture. I used a lot of fuzzy texture for all of the Capitol character’s looks,” revealed movie’s lead hair stylist Linda Flower in an interview. Singer Nicki Minaj and model Kate Moss have also been spotted in Effie-inspired wigs. For funky wigs, head to Party Hunterz, GK I; Expressions, Kamla Nagar and shops in Gaffar Market at Karol Bagh.
The Katniss Everdeen look
Actor Jennifer Lawrence, who plays Katniss Everdeen in the movie, sports different looks in the film, but her rusty and adventurous look has got maximum thumbs-up. Influenced by the military look, her style is utilitarian and practical. Fashion stylist Aakanksha Jain says, “Skinny pants in olive green or pinstripe pants, mid-thigh length hooded jacket in black or leather jacket and knee-length lace up boots can get you Katniss look.” Pick up dull and earthy colours like brown, beige, olive and black at stores such as Woodland, Promod, Vero Moda and Zara or scour flea markets such as Janpath and Sarojini Nagar for a grungy style.
The flame nails
Can’t get your eyes off The Hunger Games nail art? Here’s how you can sport it. The Katniss Everdeen-inspired flame nails are the hottest design in nail art. It is very easy to achieve and adds an element of fearless fun to your personality. You can visit any nail art salon armed with the picture of the nail art and get the look.
The French braid
Jennifer Lawrence’s French braid is racing up the trend charts. Makeup and hairstylist Chandni Singh says, “It’s a classic hair style, but in the movie we see its modern variation.” Here are few easy steps to get the look: The key is in pre-braiding preparations. To add texture to your hair use a volumising product, if your hair is particularly straight, or use a curling tong to create waves. Start by using your fingers to direct hair to one side. Make sure that the hair is free of knots or any tangles. Make sections and start braiding it side ways. For a soft romantic feel, pull out a few strands on both sides and fasten the braid with rubber bands.
The dramatic beard
Another interesting look from the movie is of actor Wes Bentley, who plays the role of Seneca Crane. Bentley’s uniquely-styled beard is being exceptionally admired. His look is styled by Hollywood’s makeup designer Ve Neil and has a fan page too on Facebook titled Seneca Crane’s beard. So, guys, if you are game for this sinister and dramatic look, you can sport this new style and add an element of uniqueness to your usual clean, shaved look.
