Call it the ripple effect from West or the Fall’s favourite outfit, but suddenly the waistcoat has become every fashionista’s staple outfit. Internationally, Katie Holmes, Halle Berry, Jessica Alba and Cheryl Cole were seen sporting one. Soon, the Bollywood babes followed suit and now, from Deepika Padukone to Gauri Khan, everyone is donning this outfit.
While, Katrina Kaif was seen in a waist-long casual waist coat, Sonam Kapoor sported an edgy one with metallic details and Kareena Kapoor chose a refreshing blue with snug fit.
Says designer Payal Jain, “Waistcoat suits almost all body types and so Indian women can safely wear it.” Add a waistcoat to your wardrobe — this season’s hottest item.
A waistcoat can actually transform that day-look into night-look without much effort. Designer Babita Malkani says, “Waistcoats go well with mid-length shift dress. For a formal look, replace blazers with dark-buttoned waistcoat over the formal shirt paired with fitted pants and accessorise with a scarf.” Adds designer Navneet Randhawa, “A waistcoat can be worn over a vest top with jeans, and can be accessorised with a long neck piece.”
The party look
Says Malkani, “For a party look, stick to satin, velvet, leather and silk waistcoats. But let your waistcoat be the attention grabber. Don’t accessorise much.”
With a waistcoat, you could go casual or formal. A nice satin shirt below a black waistcoat is like a little black dress (LBD) that can never go wrong.
Button up: If you’re pairing your waistcoat with a fitted top, then keep it unbuttoned for a more relaxed look. If you wear a loose top, button up your waistcoat to add some structure to the outfit.
Skirt it: If you enjoy wearing pencil skirts, team up the waistcoat with or wear it polo neck T-shirt and high boots or high heels.
Dress me up: Pair a knee-length dress with a waistcoat. Use the waistcoat to add a pop of colour to your ensemble and create a layered look when the weather is too warm and not suitable for cardigans or structured jackets.
Summery look: In summers, wear it with a vest underneath and pair it with funky ballet pumps and chunky earrings.
Evening out: Layer a waistcoat over a frilly or ruffle blouse and high heels, it makes for a nice evening wear.
