As sportsmen and women from around the world do their nations proud at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics, we have our eyes on inspirational fashion choices these gamechangers are opting for. From rhinestone-encrusted leotards and patriotic manicures to tattoos that profess love for the sport, inspo is abound.
Tennis champ Venus Williams is one sportswoman who knows how to take over the court in style, being spotted sporting blond and auburn box braids. Sister Serena also made fashion news: from sporting a stars-and-stripes scrunchie to having an American flag nail art on her finger.
For designer Nida Mahmood, the ‘hairspiration’ is major. “My favourite look from has to be Venus’s fiery hair colour. It makes a big statement on court,” she says.
What else shines at the ongoing event? Gymnasts from around the globe and their national leotard costumes encrusted with crystals. As Dipa Karmakar did the country proud in a pretty white and green number spruced with shining stones, Great Britain has roped in Stella McCartney to design their sporting gear.
For designer Rahul Mishra, sports is a big influencer for the fashion world. “Fashion is not just about clothing, but also one’s attitude in life, and sports is a big influencer globally. It impacts not only street fashion, but also the runway with utility fabrics like neoprene making their way into mainstream luxury wear,” he says. Let’s just say, athletes are changing the game in more ways than one.
