dressesBe it a passing fad or a an ultimate credit crunch attire, it seems that zipper is the latest trend to alter your dress from short to long, from tubeless to halter, or just to add an edge to your simple dress. Actress Liz Hurley had made a style statement of sorts with her safety pin dress eons ago, but now it is the zipper which is zipping up international trends.

According to designer Sebastian Errazuriz the “zip is king. And forget fabric, all you need is 120 of the metal fastenings for a show-stopping outfit. His zipper dress can be worn in three different ways”, as reported in Daily Mail. At the last fashion week in the Capital (Fall/Winter 09), designer duo Alpana and Neeraj of Azara came out with a dress made of zips, which could not be worn in as many ways as Sebastian’s but still got rave reviews. Alpana says, “Lot of people ordered the dress but with couple of variations.” On how one can experiment with the dress, making it look different, she says, “The pullers are metalic, so one can pull it and make it more interesting.” The designer duo have also created a zipper biker jacket.

A plethora of magazines are flooded with photospreads on zip-detailed gowns and dresses. Atsu is another designers who has used the trend to make his collection edgy. He says, “I have used zips in lot of different styles. It looks nice when you mix industrial zip with soft fabrics, it gives you a different style of harsh feminism.”

If you are looking for a zipper accessory, head to Karol Bagh and pick up a pair of zipper chappal and bags are embellished with zips. Kishan Kumar, a shopkeeper in Central Market, Karol Bagh, says, “These chappals come in various colours. Bahut college ke bache lene aate hai aur yeh zip wala joota mangte hai.”
