Lakme Fashion Week, that concluded in Mumbai recently, regained the missing buzz this season with many good shows and initiatives that brought fashion closer to good causes.
An announcement was made to rescue and provide shelter to stray dogs using fashion as a platform and a show by Vikram Phadnis showcasing the good work being done by Swades Foundation, an organisation spearheaded by Ronnie Screwvala, in small villages in Maharashtra proved to me a moving yet meaningful one with the villagers engaged in social activities, walking the runway in the company of celebrities and models. The show devoted to Save The Tiger cause witnessed a display of 41 creations, designed specially with this theme in mind. It was interesting to see their interpretation of tiger on the runway. While some put in a lot of effort in creating something for the occasion in 10 days, the lackadaisical effort put in by some was clearly evident as well.
There was plenty on the glamour side too. Manish Malhotra paid a tribute to 100 years of Bollywood with a show having rare celebrities like Asha Bhosle walking the runway for the first time. New York-based fashion designer Naeem Khan presented his collection of red carpet outfits on the runway. Tarun Tahilani’s offsite opening of the fashion week coupled with Namrata Joshipura’s grand finale offering in high-tech format, and shows that came in between were some of the brightest, like that of Kunal Rawal, Swati Kalsi, Pooja Kapoor, Soumitra Mondal and Akaaro.
LFW also became a platform for promotion of Indian textiles in designer fashion on the Indian Textile Day. Some of the leading fashion designers showcased their collection on this day using traditional textiles in Indian and western silhouettes. While the event was essentially a womenswear affair, a fair sprinkle of impeccable menswear was also showcased by Arjun Khanna, Shantanu & Nikhil and a few others.
