What were they thinking?

Bollywood’s babes get a huge paycheck for performing at the New Year parties. But the moolah’s clearly not enough to buy the right outfit.

At recent New Year bashes, a few of Bollywood’s ladies wore itsy-bitsy, tacky clothes for their performances, which were a far cry from their diva look.

Actor Malaika Arora Khan, who charged a whopping R3 crore for her New Year eve’s performance — wore a glittering gold bustier and hot pants. Actor Mallika Sherawat, who charged R1crore, was seen in a crystal-studded black bra and a shiny jumpsuit with tassles. Among the fashion disasters, were also actors Kashmeera Shah and Mugdha Godse.

Experts say most actors aren’t bothered about what they wear for such performances as they get enough compensation. “They perform for a certain kind of crowd, so they need flashy and skimpy outfits and end up looking very tacky. With the huge amount of cash they get, they sleepwalk through the 30-minute  performance,” says stylist Rishi Raj.

Designer Reynu Taandon explains, “I feel that the outfits actors wear at events are usually not designed by their own stylists, and that could be the reason they look so over-the-top.”

“There is a huge fashion confusion in the industry. Celebs imitate the West, without thinking if it suits them. Mostly, such experiments go horribly wrong,” says designer Ritu Kumar.

However, the actors are unfazed by the criticism. Item girl Kashmeera Shah says, “I am a sex symbol...

I don’t dress skimpily, I dress sexily.”

Actor Mugdha Godse says, “Whatever we wear, we get criticised. So, I just believe in wearing whatever I am comfortable in.”
