A 2-0 win would have been ideal but this victory tastes great because the players worked very hard while enjoying every moment of the game. Good to head the points table, but next match with Lajong (April 30) (is) most crucial (if we are) to become champions.

01:30 PM IST: Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the Aizawl FC vs Mohun Bagan I-League match.

One year is a long time in football. Ask Aizawl Football Club and their head coach Khalid Jamil. The former were relegated from the I-League at the end of their debut top-flight season in 2015-16, despite finishing one spot above the bottom-placed team DSK Shivajians, who had immunity from relegation.

Khalid Jamil, then the long-time serving head coach Mumbai FC, was relieved from his position at the end of the season.

With Goan clubs pulling out from the I-League, however, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) was pushed to a corner. It decided to reinstate Aizawl FC to the top-flight, much to the relief of the club’s fans.

Ahead of the new season, Khalid Jamil was handed the reins of the club. The two parties have since come together to plot one of the most fascinating stories in Indian football history, one that has defied all expectations and dialectics of the sport.

As things stand, Aizawl FC find themselves level of points with league leaders Mohun Bagan ahead of their meeting with the Mariners in the penultimate matchday of the season at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Aizawl on Monday.

The equation

A win by at least a two-goal margin will guarantee the league title to Aizawl. A draw will pave the way for Bagan to reclaim the title, with the latter facing Chennai City at home in the season’s final game and the Khalid Jamil-coached side taking on Shillong Lajong away from home in their season-ender.

A defeat for Aizawl FC will mean that Bagan will be crowned champions.

Players to watch out for

Mohun Bagan have some of the best players in the league at their disposal. Sony Norde, Darryl Duffy and Jeje will be key in Bagan’s quest for goals, and will undoubtedly draw the attention of the Aizawl backline. Katsumi Yusa’s creativity will also be a cause for concern for Khalid Jamil’s team.

In contrast, Aizawl have excelled as a unit on the back of some very disciplined performances this season. Striker Kamo Stephane Bayi and midfielders Alfred Jaryan and Mahmoud Al Amna have been crucial to Aizawl’s spectacular campaign, and will have a big job in their hands on Saturday.

Defenders Kingsley Eze and Ashutosh Mehta will have the task of tackling the treats of Duffy and Norde, respectively, which will make for two very interesting battles during the game.

The brains behind the teams

Sanjoy Sen is about to complete his third season as Mohun Bagan’s head coach, while this is Khalid Jamil’s first season at Aizawl FC, having coached Mumbai FC in seven I-League campaigns.

Kick off: 2 pm at Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, Aizawl.
