Colombian striker Steven Mendoza, who last year helped Chennaiyin FC to the Indian Super League title with his Golden Boot-winning performance, has signed for New York City FC, the MLS club announced on its website. Mendoza, who was in Chennaiyin on loan from the Brazilian club Corinthians, had previously expressed the hope that a good outing in India would help him earn a better opportunity.
“I think Mendoza will be an exciting player to watch and will bring further pace and creative ability to the squad. He has good experience in Brazil with Corinthians and has played abroad in India --- so he also has experience playing outside of South America. We are confident that he will adapt well to MLS and be an important player for us moving forward,” NYCFC sporting director, Claudio Reyna, was quoted as saying by the club website.
New York City FC is owned by Premier League club Manchester City’s parent body, City Football Group, and is coached by former club player and French icon Patrick Viera.
