Jackichand Singh, India winger, says the upcoming tri-nation series featuring Mauritius and St Kitts & Nevis will be important when it comes to preparing for the AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Macau.

As the Indian football team prepares for the tri-nation series in Mumbai, starting August 19, India winger Jackichand Singh said the tournament was important for the AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Macau on September 5.

“We are preparing for the qualifier against Macau and a good performance here will put us in a good position,” said Jackichand prior to a training session on Thursday.

India face Mauritius in the opening fixture at the Andheri Sports Complex on the back of 13 wins in their last 15 international matches. While admitting the victories have been a confidence booster, Jackichand is wary of the pressure created by the triumphant run.

“We obviously feel slight pressure. The team is getting better and winning matches, and has helped us gain confidence. We are not overconfident and will take it one match at a time. Of course, we will try and win games. Everyone who has been called up for the series will give it their best,” he said.

Coach Stephen Constantine’s policy of experimentation, giving young players a taste of national-level football has also been a welcome change, keeping them on their toes.

“There is some competition between the players, not openly of course. But whoever works hard and shows the desired results gets the chance. We all work hard together. The juniors and seniors are together in this. That is our strength,” he said.

“The team is settled and we are receiving guidance from the coach (Constantine), staff and doctor. GPS has also helped us a lot,” he added. India will play the second game of the tournament against St Kitts & Nevis on August 24.
