It is easy to forget why Mohammedan Sporting is considered to be one of the more popular Indian football outfits. With their last major title win being the 1984 Federation Cup, the 122-year-old team had started to lose its lustre. The administration seemed myopic, players felt ordinary.

Yet its strong fan base, rivaling those of the more successful clubs like Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, kept it afloat.

It is thus fair to say that the loyal fan base finally got its due on Thursday as the black-and-white brigade defeated ONGC 2-1 to win the prestigious Durand Cup after 73 years. Sporting was the first Indian club to win the title in 1940.
