The second leg of the semifinal showed early signs of getting volatile after Atletico de Kolkata defender Robert Lalthlamuana was sent off in the 41st minute for his second bookable offence. For the rest of the match, Atletico de Kolkata closed down their goalmouth, frustrating India skipper Sunil Chhetri’s Mumbai City FC.
It was not really clear what led to Mondal’s injury but blood was streaming down his face when the television cameras zoomed on him once.
Last year’s ISL final between winners Chhennaiyin FC and FC Goa too ended with an ugly brawl between players of both teams and officials. Following that FC Goa boycotted the presentation ceremony and then filed a police complaint against Chennaiyin FC’s Brazilian star and captain Elano Blumer, accusing him of assault.
