Midfielder Ryan Giggs has been appointed player-coach at Manchester United, the English champions said on Thursday. Giggs, 39, signed a one-year extension to his playing contract in March and will combine his new duties with being a member of the first-team squad. Former Welsh international Giggs said: "I'm really looking forward to working alongside David and the team."

Brazil in top 10
Lausanne: Five-times world champions Brazil leapt back into the top 10 of the FIFA rankings after winning the Confederations Cup last month. Spain stayed top, despite losing 3-0 to Brazil in the Confederations Cup final, while Germany remained second and Colombia climbed to third spot.

Cameroon suspended
Lausanne: Cameroon were suspended from international soccer on Thursday, just 15 minutes after they had been boosted by the news that they were being awarded three World Cup qualifying points for an unrelated matter. The provisional ban was imposed by FIFA due to government interference in the country's football federation.
