Polaroid launches an action cam for the rest of us

Polaroid Cube

A perfect example of boxing clever, the Polaroid Cube is a tiny 3.5cm square action camera that can shoot in full HD and capture stills too, but thanks to its diminuitive size it won't split your pocket and due to its similarly low price, it won't break the bank either.

As such it could be the perfect solution for people who like the idea of owning an action camera but are put off by the expense or complication of something like the GoPro.

And the Cube is incredibly simple to use. No wi-fi connection or Bluetooth and no smartphone app: simply press the button on the top and it starts filming. It has a fixed, 124-degree lens that offers a wide enough angle to get pretty much everything in the frame and a selector switch allows you to flick between 720p and 1080HD resolution.

The images are saved to a 32GB SD card and the battery is good for 90 minutes or until the SD card runs out of space, whichever one comes quicker.

As well as being simple to operate, the camera is simple to mount. Its base is magnetic so it should snap to a steel surface and, because its casing is shockproof, it won't be the end of the world if it subsequently snaps off again.

However, to make it more appealing to extreme sports types, the company also offers a range of mounts that will be sold separately as well as a cover and lanyard for wearing the camera around your neck. And, although Polaroid says that the camera is water resistant, one of the options is for a waterproof housing.

The Cube is on sale now for $100.
