Speech therapists provide treatment and counselling to people with problems related to voice, speech and language disorders, including problems like stuttering, articulation, difficulties due to a cleft palate, laryngectomy (removal of the larynx), as well as neurological speech disorders, stroke etc.

According to Dr Vakil P Shah, assistant director at Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for the Hearing Handicapped, New Delhi, this job requires scientific aptitude as well as strong interpersonal skills to work with patients of different age groups.

“Growing awareness about new fields where one can explore the scope of counselling and behavioural sciences are other reasons why speech therapy is now being recognised on a larger scale,” he says. The services of speech therapists are available in community-based rehabilitative programmes, special schools for persons with disabilities, old age homes, training institutes and research institutes.
