A 21-year-old mechanic riding past a Rapid Metro construction site was killed on Saturday morning after a 15-foot-long iron girder fell on his head from a Metro pillar.
The Gurgaon police have registered a case of negligence causing death under Section 304A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against Rapid MetroRail Gurgaon Limited (RMGL), the promoter of the Rapid Metro project. No arrest has been made as yet.
The accident took place at about 10am near DLF City (Phase 2) Rapid Metro station when Vikas Kumar, a resident of Delhi's Baljeet Nagar, was returning home.
Despite the fact that Vikas was wearing a helmet, his head started bleeding profusely after the impact.
Vikas's colleague, Shyam Bhagat, who was on a motorcycle behind him, rushed him to Neelkanth hospital in Nathupur village where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
"He was dead when he was brought to the hospital. He died because of excessive bleeding caused due to the head injury," said Anil Kumar, the deceased's brother-in-law.
The police registered a case upon Bhagat's complaint.
Though RMGL termed the case a "road accident", it promised to pay suitable compensation to the victim's family.
"The accident near DLF Phase 2 Rapid Metro station prima facie appears to be a road accident where a biker hit a labourer carrying iron bar, lost his balance and fell down. Rapid Metro and their contractor are investigating the matter. Rapid Metro will give suitable compensation to the victim's family even if investigation confirms it is a road accident," said Sarvesh Tiwari, spokesperson, RMGL.
Vikas, the sole bread earner of his family, is survived by his mother, father and three sisters.
He was working as a field engineer with a home and kitchen appliances manufacturer in DLF Phase 1 as well as pursuing bachelors degree in commerce.
His younger sister was to get married on December 5.
"Vikas was all set to marry off his sister. We cannot say anything about the wedding now," said Anil Kumar, the victim's brother-in-law.
Earlier on October 8, nearly 10 labourers had a close shave at another rapid Metro construction site when a portion of an under-construction floor they were working on broke and stuck suspended in the air around 15 metres above the ground.
One labourer was injured in the incident.
Rapid MetroRail Gurgaon project is a privately-funded project. It is Gurgaon’s intra city Metro service with six stations.
The R1,099 crore project is likely to be completed by March/April next year.
