The city police have fined 50 police personnel found guilty of violating traffic rules in three months (till March 25, 2012).

In 2011, only 100 policemen were fined for the offence. Around 60% challans were slapped with the help of social networking site Facebook, where locals uploaded pictures of policemen indulging in traffic violations. While in 2010, no policeman was fined.

“The police have been going overboard in urging the public to obey road safety rules. First, they should follow the rules themselves and then ask others to do so,” said a commuter.

“Traffic policemen are quick to confront us, but hesitate to fine when a khaki-clad person is found guilty,” said another commuter.

The traffic police have been maintaining that they would not tolerate any violation, even if it involves senior government officials or policemen.

“The law-breakers will have to face consequences as per the law,” said a senior traffic police official.

“We have taken action against offenders, including policemen. Facebook, a social networking site, has helped us immensely. Sixty per cent cases, involving policemen, were uploaded on the traffic police's page by locals,” said another police officer.

“We take the complaints seriously. A special team has been deployed to reply to the posts on Facebook on a priority basis. We want more people to join our page for regular feedback,” the officer added.

Last year, head constable Sarvan Kumar was suspended after one Daksh Ghudaiya uploaded a video of Kumar demanding Rs1,000 bribe on the traffic police's FB page.
