‘Action against suppliers, touts soon to cut the supply network’

gurgaon Updated: Feb 28, 2012 01:39 IST

Are you aware that illegal water plants are still functioning and supply of spurious water is increasing by the day?
We have sealed the small water plants we knew of and no activity is going on there. If supply is increasing, we will check the places again. I will depute officials to keep a tab as summer is approaching and demand will increase.

What actions are you planning to take against the mafia?
We will conduct raids on retail outlets as well as we cannot let anyone play with the health of people. We are conducting regular raids since we have come to know about illegal water supply.

Does the police department know exactly how many such unauthorised plants are operating?
No. If we had known, we would have sealed all the sites. We have planned to call a meeting with the companies producing and selling branded water so that they can help us reach such plants. It’s easy for them to detect any misdoing and we will give them full support. In January, we busted a major gang and arrested eight people after a renowned water company complained that its sales were dipping.

Did you get any complaints after a water mafia gang was busted in January?
No we haven’t received any complaint after that but we are working on our known as summers are approaching and this is business time for such mafias.

What action will you take against anyone caught now?
We are working in co-ordination with the health department to conduct raids in suspected areas. Action will not only be taken against the suppliers but also the touts and crack down on the entire supply chain to block the network. The culprits will be arrested and put behind bars.
