A day after Badshahpur MLA Rao Dharampal allegedly passed derogatory remarks to a woman coach of the national women’s kabaddi team on her attire at a government college, the incident created ripples in political circles.

Dharampal had told Sunil Dabas, 37, a Dronacharya Awardee, to wear appropriate clothes during a function at Guru Dronacharya Government PG College. Dabas, who was wearing a pair of trousers and a shirt, fainted and had to be rushed to a private hospital.

On Saturday, a group of women activists from the Haryana Janhit Congress held a protest in front of the MLA’s house. Shouting slogans, the protesters also burnt an effigy of Dharampal.

The police had to intervene to prevent clashes between the MLA’s supporters and protesters. Terming his comments as an ‘elderly suggestion’, Dharampal said, “I am 71 years old and Dabas is like my daughter. I advised her to dress up like other women, who were wearing sarees at the function. When I got to know that she had fainted, I tendered an apology.”

RK Yadav, principal of the college, claimed that the issue had been blown out of proportion.
