An 11-year-old boy died after he slipped and fell into a pit filled with rainwater when he was about to get down from his school bus in Sector 5 on Wednesday, the police said.

The victim, Chirag Sharma, the resident of Swarup Garden in Rajendra Park, was on his way back home when the incident took place. His house was at a stone's throw from the spot.

"As the bus neared his stop, Chirag walked up to the bus door and was about to get down. Suddenly, the driver applied brakes and he slipped out of the vehicle," a police officer said.

As it was raining heavily, the streets had been inundated and Chirag fell into the waterlogged pit. His school friends cried for help and alerted the bus driver, who immediately pulled Chirag out and rushed him to a nearby hospital.

"When he was pulled out of the pit, Chirag was alive but unconscious. Although the driver rushed him to the hospital, doctors declared him dead on arrival," the police officer said.

The police have begun investigations but no FIR has been lodged yet.
