Twenty-year-old gangster Akash Yadav, who hit the headlines in 2007 when he gunned down a classmate in his Gurgaon school at 13, was on the run after murdering a rival on Tuesday, police said.

Yadav, who has about a dozen cases of attempt to murder, robbery, snatching, extortion and assault against his name, killed Manish Kumar, 23, with the help of two associates in a gang war at a market in Gurgaon’s sector 21, said officials.

During preliminary investigations, police discovered Yadav had stolen a US-made pistol from home and shot classmate Abhishek Tyagi point-blank on the staircase of Euro International school about seven years ago. The teenager, who would often bully other children, then handed the gun to a friend who too fired at Tyagi, killing him.

The youngsters were sent to a juvenile home. But after a year, Yadav was released on bail.

On Tuesday, Manish Kumar and two of his aides went to the sector 21 market on a motorcycle, in the mood for some momos.

Assistant commissioner of police Rajesh Kumar said while Kumar— who was an accused in several cases of attempt to murder, robbery, theft and chain-snatching— and his associates were trying to place the order, Yadav and his accomplices showed up.

There was an argument and Yadav whipped out a pistol and fired five rounds at Kumar, who was hit three times and collapsed. The others fled the scene.

“The friends returned after a few minutes and found Kumar lying in a pool of blood and rushed him to a private hospital where he was declared brought dead,” said Kumar.

Passers-by informed police who filed an FIR against Yadav and his associates.

Sources say the trial in the 2007 murder case continues and Yadav is due to appear in court on April 1.
