A U-turn that was blocked to ease bottlenecks on the Gurgaon-Delhi expressway toll plaza had to be reopened within minutes on Saturday after it aggravated the traffic chaos.
The Punjab and Haryana high court had on Wednesday ordered closure of the U-turn near Ambience mall on the Gurgaon side of the toll plaza as vehicles using it would hold up traffic crossing over to Delhi.
With the turn blocked, motorists heading towards the mall, MG Road and DLF City Phase 2 and 3, were forced to cross the toll gates, enter Delhi and take a U-turn under the Rajokri flyover and pay toll again to re-enter Gurgaon.
Motorists going towards Ambience mall got furious as soon as the toll-free peak hours (8.30am to 10am) passed. They refused to pay toll and insisted on using the blocked U-turn, causing massive jams.
The situation worsened so much within 10 minutes that the police had no option but to remove the barriers at the U-turn.
The turn shall remain open on Sunday as well.
But the police will have to explain why the experiment failed when the case comes up for hearing in the high court on Monday.
