As all CNG distribution units in the city remained closed for five days, auto-rickshaw drivers in the city had to cut down on their daily earning up to five times by running their vehicles on petrol.

Auto drivers said the daily refill cost of their CNG cylinders used to be R100-200. But due to lack of CNG supply since Monday, they had been buying petrol worth R500 every day. The CNG distributors said the supply will restore from Friday night.

“I drive about 200 kilometers every day and using petrol is not feasible. Petrol costs about five rupees per kilometer whereas CNG costs just one to two rupees per kilometer. There is no profit at the end,” said Liaqat, an auto driver near sector 46.

Besides, they also used to have argument with passengers who were not willing to pay more than the usual fare. Under such circumstances, the auto drivers had no option but to quote just a marginally increased fare or remain jobless.

Binod Kumar, an auto driver in Sector 30, said, “The customers do not agree to pay more than they always paid. They do not realise that the running cost has shot up manifold for us”.

Though there is no fixed price for any distance in the city in the absence of strict regulation, there is an acceptable auto fare, especially for short distance travel.

Many auto drivers do not own their vehicles and have to hire them for R400 to R600 daily. “We cannot compromise on the rent or else the agencies will not give us the autos. So, we barely manage a daily income of R100. It is difficult to carry on like this,”said another auto driver near Huda City Centre Metro station.

Earlier, the auto drivers near Metro stations used to charge exorbitantly. But now, they are ready to ferry passengers at the minimum fare they can afford.
