The Gurgaon police on Thursday night arrested the father and cousin brother of 17-year-old girl Shivani - whose body was found in the tool box of a school bus in the city the previous day - for murdering her in a case of honour killing.
The police said that the father, Sanjay Valmiki, 38, had confessed to smothering the girl in the early hours of Monday with the help of her cousin brother Ameen, 21, when she tried to run away from home. They then dumped the body in the tool box of the bus parked nearby in Sector 5. Both accused are daily-wage labourers.
It has emerged that Shivani was having an affair with a boy from Rewari, which is about 60km from Gurgaon, against the wishes of her family. She had tried to elope with him twice before, only to be brought back home.
A month ago, the family had even shifted to Gurgaon from their original home in Mahendragarh, about 110km away, hoping that this would put an end to the relationship. But Shivani continued seeing the boy.
According to neighbours, Valmiki and Ameen beat up Shivani on Sunday night, and she kept wailing into the early hours of Monday. The family fled the house after neighbours questioned them about her whereabouts later in the day.
Gurgaon police commissioner Alok Mittal said, "The family tried to misguide the police during investigation, but our teams cracked the case."
