In a literal rerun of the tragic BMW hit-and-run case, a four-year-old girl was killed and nine persons were injured when a speeding WagonR rammed into a Maruti Omni on MG Road on late Saturday night.
The collision was so strong that the Omni car rolled over a couple of times. The driver of the WagonR was allegedly drunk. All the passengers in the Omni car — 10 in total — were relatives.
Brijesh Kumar, 45, hailing from Bhondsi's Maruti Kunj, was returning with his family and relatives from Delhi when the incident took place at around 1.30 in the night.
The families of Kumar, his sister and brother were returning from a relative’s retirement function at Lodhi Road when a black WagonR hit their car from behind. Kumar's three-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Sanskriti, died on the spot.
The rest of the members were seriously injured and rushed to Neelkant hospital in DLF City Phase 3. They were later referred to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi. The injured are — Kumar, his wife, two sons, brother, sister-in-law, niece, sister and brother-in-law.
The four people travelling in WagonR fled away from the spot. Whisky bottles were found inside the car. A witness said they were so drunk that they could not even walk properly.
A case was registered on the complaint of Omni car’s driver.
“We have registered the case and have taken the statement of the witnesses. We are conducting raids to arrest the accused,” said Hardeep Singh, SHO at Sector 29 police station.
