Two days after the multi-crore robbery at an apartment in DLF Magnolias, the police have zeroed in on three suspects who are believed to have crossed the Loni border into Uttar Pradesh. The police said they were able to ascertain this through the call detail records of the suspects.
DLF Magnolias is known for being one of the safest places in Gurgaon and the incident on Saturday had raised security concerns. It left the residents of the upscale locality fuming as they pay a hefty maintenance fee, ranging from Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 50,000 a month.
The prime accused in the robbery, Shanker who worked as the family’s cook, was in constant touch with his associates — former cook Suraj and his girlfriend Poonam, the police said.
It is also suspected that Shanker had carried out the robbery after closely coordinating with the other two. They managed to flee Gurgaon within an hour of the crime, the police said.
DCP (Crime) Balbir Singh said, “This is not a security lapse. The family members had kept the cook without doing a police verification. Despite the driver sharing the same room with the cook, he had no inkling of the conspiracy and did not even check with the domestic help as to why she was throwing up (after having the sedative laced drink).”
“We are closing in on the accused and will arrest them soon. They avoided the metro station to leave the city as they were aware of strict vigilance and checks at the entrance of metro stations. There is a possibility that they took local transport to reach Delhi from where they proceeded towards Loni,” Singh said.
Piecing together the sequence of events, the police said that on Saturday afternoon, Shanker offered a drink laced with sedatives to the domestic help and decamped with cash and gold ornaments worth crores from the apartment of Amit Rana, who is in Australia currently.
The accused broke into the lockers in the master bedroom, collected the booty in a bag and used the owner’s Jaguar to leave the highly secure Magnolias apartment complex inside DLF country and Golf Club, the police said.
The police said CCTV cameras have caught Shanker after leaving the house, boarding the Jaguar parked in the basement.
Though Shanker abandoned the car some 500 metres from the apartment, he took away the keys. The police had to use duplicate keys to drive the car to the police station, an officer said.
After going through the call detail records of the accused, the police found that the trio had been in constant touch with one another since January. This has led the police to believe that they planned the robbery in January itself.
The police sources also said they believe Suraj had planted Shanker in the apartment complex after he left the family on the pretext of going to Nepal.
The crime branch is questioning the Suraj’s and Shanker’s friends and relatives. The police have interrogated Poonam’s friends and they allegedly told the police of her impending visit to Nepal.
The police said the entire sequence of events was recorded on CCTV cameras inside the apartment and in the complex, including the one at the exit gate.
