The police on Monday night have arrested two persons from Sector 9 on charges of selling firecrackers. The police patrolling teams conducted raids at several busy market areas of the city to check illegal sale of firecrackers in Gurgaon ahead of Diwali festival.
Officials said that checks are being conducted with a view to enforcing the Supreme Court’s October 9 order, prohibiting the sale of fireworks and crackers in Delhi-NCR until November 1. The order was pronounced to curb air pollution caused by bursting of firecrackers.
Although the government, environmentalists and green activists have been advocating for eco-friendly measures and urging people not to burst crackers on Diwali because of the air and noise pollution it causes in the city, people were seen enquiring about firecrackers’ sale and asking shopkeepers in markets on ways to procure fireworks.
In Gadoli Kalan market in Sector 10, a shop was sealed in the presence of a duty magistrate after a tip-off that crackers were being stored there for sale on Tuesday, said Ravinder Kumar, public relations officer, Gurgaon police.
The police recovered 39 boxes of firecrackers from the shop and lodged a case at the Sector 10 police station against the owner of the shop for allegedly flouting the SC order.
The police filed a case against two persons — Bhagwan, a resident of Gadoli Kalan, and Ashok Kumar Saini — in connection with the case, the Kumar said. He added that the accused will be arrested soon.
During patrolling, a police team noticed that two men were selling crackers at Ravi Nagar Mandi in Sector 9. The accused were identified as Gudu Singh (20) and Sonu More(22).
The police said that both of them are from Uttar Pradesh and had come to sell crackers in the city.
The police recovered 50 packets of firecrackers that included rockets, bombs and pulljhari, worth around Rs15,000, from the women and arrested them.
A case has been registered at Sector 9A police station under section sections 4 and 5 of Explosive Substances Act and 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The duo will be produced in court on Wednesday, the police said.
“Police teams in civil dresses are also conducting raids in all market areas of the city to check sale of firecrackers,” said Raj Pal, assistant sub-inspector, Sector 9A police station.
On Saturday, a 35-year-old woman was arrested by the police for allegedly selling firecrackers in Rajiv Nagar area.
More than 100 packets of firecrackers worth Rs25,000 were recovered from her shop by the police. The woman was later released on bail by a district court on Monday.
