As New Year festivities draw closer, the Gurgaon police plan to take no chances this time around.

Wednesday onwards, the entire 3,000-strong force of field police personnel will be deployed on city roads, in addition to 600 others drawn from the reserve battalion. The special team, to be stationed till the first week of January, will keep a strict check on the Mall Mile. The stretch, notorious for law and order lapses, houses around 50 pubs and bars.

The Gurgaon police commissioner, KK Sindhu, has already cancelled staff leaves till December 31.

He also directed officials on duty to extend their night shift by two hours, from 11pm to 2pm, apart from increasing police presence on the MG Road.

The Gurgaon police department has a 4,000-strong workforce, including IPS and HPS rank officials. It also includes officials in the cyber crime cell and those carrying out duties inside offices.

Moreover, all liquor vends have been directed to down their shutters by midnight. Those with permission to work beyond the deadline will be allowed to serve liquor till 2am. Traffic police personnel with 100 alcometers will be spread across the city to crack down on drunken driving.

The police department has also issued strict instructions to pubs and bars, seeking adherence to deadlines and ban on entry without a valid identity proof.

While the number of women personnel deployed on the MG Road has been increased, senior police officials have also been visiting the area on a daily basis.
