In a major breakthrough, the Gurgaon police arrested four carjackers from Sector 40 in the wee hours of Wednesday. A stolen Toyota Innova car, which was reported stolen on Tuesday, was recovered from their possession.
The accused were identified as Pawan Kumar and Puneet Singh of Kanhai village, Sahil Kataria of Sector 29 and Monu of Sector 40.
Police officials said a case of car theft had been registered against them on Tuesday.
Acting on a tip-off that the carjackers were on their way to dispose of the car in the market area, a police team swooped upon the accused and arrested them.
Sanjeev Talwar, a resident of Jalandhar, was visiting his relatives in South City-1 on Monday night. He had sent his driver to the Sector-31 market to make some purchases.
After finishing shopping when the driver was about to board the car, two persons allegedly pushed him into the vehicle and assaulted him. The other two accused stood nearby on the motorcycle.
The carjackers dropped the driver at an isolated spot and fled with the car. The driver immediately informed his owner and the police control room.
“The accused will be produced in court on Thursday. We are interrogating them,” said inspector Vikash Kaushik, SHO of the Sector-40 police station.
