The Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway witnessed a pile-up of four vehicles near the Signature Tower flyover on Tuesday morning. No injuries were reported in the incident, the police said.
According to the police, the four vehicles piled up after a speeding vehicle, moving from Gurgaon to Delhi on the speed lane, suddenly applied the brakes. The accident happened close to the Signature tower crossing opposite the Japanese hostel.
The crash led to a half-hour-long traffic jam as the drivers got into an argument and refused to move the vehicles to the side of the expressway. It was only after the intervention of the traffic police that the issue was resolved.
However, no case was registered, the police said.
Two fatal accidents had happened on the expressway in the last week as well.
When asked about the frequent accidents and rampant violation of speed and lane change rules on the expressway, CEO of the expressway operator -- MCEPL -- S Raghuraman said they had made repeated requests to the police department to intervene and implement rules, but in vain.
On Saturday, a youth was mangled to death close to this spot when his two-wheeler was hit by a speeding vehicle and he was run over by a couple of other cars.
Raghuraman added that they had installed boards and warning signs mentioning the speed limit on the expressway. “The National Highways Authority of India and the police department should meet at the highest levels and plan a way out to enforce rules. Otherwise such accidents will keep happening and more people will lose their lives,” he said.
The authorities have fixed 80 kmph speed limit on flyovers and 60 kmph speed limit at junctions on the expressway. On the service roads, vehicles should not cross 40 kmph, officials said.
