Charged with looting and assaulting more than 20 executives, three members of an interstate highway robbers' gang were arrested on Wednesday. The city police also seized two country-made pistols, three laptops and the car (HR-26-BR-5325) used for committing the crimes.
The accused were identified as Sonu from Bhiwani along with Rewari residents Inderjeet alias Monu and Hanuman. According to the police, the gang lured victims on the pretext of offering a lift in their Maruti Swift Dzire car. After the unsuspecting passenger boarded the car, they assaulted them and forced to divulge their ATM card information to withdraw cash.
The investigation into the multiple robberies was handed over to Gurgaon's Crime Investigation Agency-17. Following a tip-off and technical probe by the cyber crime cell, the team, led by inspector Rajinder Singh, nabbed the three accused before they could rob another victim on Wednesday.
"The gang was involved in more than 20 cases registered in Haryana and Rajasthan. They are history-sheeters and have already been arrested thrice," said Alok Mittal, police commissioner, Gurgaon.
The accused had robbed the car used in the crimes from a driver on June 6. The accused are also learnt to have set ablaze a Maruti Alto car robbed from Alwar in Rajasthan after using it for three operations.
Arrested in 2007, 2009 and 2010, the trio was freed from Bhondsi jail this year. On being produced in court on Thursday, the arrested were remanded to one day's police custody for further investigation.
