The Gurgaon police changed the women helpline desk number on all Metro stations of the city on Monday evening. The helpline has been changed from 8130990038 to 9999981829.
Though the new series of mobile numbers starting with 99999.... was re-introduced for police officials in February, a few days after Alok Mittal took charge as the Gurgaon police commissioner, the women helpline number was not changed.
The helpline was introduced during the tenure of the then police commissioner KK Sindhu in 2011.
Joint commissioner of police Maheshwar Dayal said, “We have tried to cut short the chain of ownership issue to help victims. The new number is displayed on all Metro stations. We have asked women personnel to help people when they approach them regarding a complaint or query.”
The earlier helpline 8130990038 — displayed on the women helpdesk at all Metro stations — was the number of the SHO Metro police station.
The number was functional round-the-clock and whenever any call was received by the SHO, a rescue team was sent to help the victim.
However, the new helpline is likely to cause inconvenience for people commuting in a specific area on a daily basis.
“The police department should have acted in a different way. They keep changing helpline numbers. This causes inconvenience to women,” said Neha Mehta, a commuter. Meanwhile, the women helpline number (1091) remains the same.
