The drive was carried out on the direction of Vivek Kalia, estate officer, HUDA.

Traffic police officers fined commuters and motorists caught violating road rules. Most were penalised for illegal parking and wrong-way driving. Officers from Sadar police station were deputed to provide security cover and ward off possible resistance from agitators. Properties and possessions of encroachers were sealed and the violators were let off after an official warning.

“The anti encroachment drive at MG road has been on since March 24. Encouraged y the success of the drive and the change that has come about since the commuters were made to follow road rules and penalised for violations, the focus of the Huda, MCG and Gurgaon police has now shifted to Sohna Road. The drive will continue for three consecutive days, following which a dedicated team will be formed to monitor and prevent any further encroachment on the stretch,” SS Rohilla, spokesperson, MCG, said.

According to officials, Sohna Road was selected for the latest phase of the anti-encroachment drive as pedestrian and commuters complained of reduced road width, causing snarls and preventing pedestrians from using footpaths.

The data released by the Gurgaon police was assessed and it was found that the encroachments were resulting in a large number of accidents on the road.
