A 20-year-old auto-rickshaw driver, who was arrested on wee hours of Monday for allegedly raping a seven-year-old minor girl in the bushes behind Dundahera, was sleeping in his room with door locked from outside when the police surrounded him.

The incident took place on Sunday.

The accused used the window to sneak into the victim’s residence, the police said. The accused had been stalking the victim for the last few days and sensed his chance on Sunday evening as none of the senior members of the family were present at home, the police said.

A case was registered at Udyog Vihar police station after the police received a call from the civil hospital where the girl was admitted, the police said.

According to the police, Kamal Kumar, the accused and a resident of Dundahera, had been stalking the victim for a week and had tried to get friendly with her cousins by buying them chocolates.

On Sunday, the accused, on the pretext of getting chocolates, took the minor to an isolated place in Dundahera and raped her. He fled the spot, leaving the minor crying.

A passerby informed the police that he had spotted the minor girl near the bushes. Her parents and family members reached spot after getting word of what happened and got her admitted to a hospital.

The police formed 25 teams to track down the accused and also obtained CCTV footage of him walking with the minor at two separate locations.

“Though his face was not clearly visible in the footage, his clothes helped us identify him. We got a sketch of him made and circulated prinouts of it among locals. Some children, who were witness to the abduction, helped the police track down the accused,” Sumit Kuhar, DCP, crime, said.
