After scores of complaints about over-charging autorickshaw rides, the district administration has taken up the task of installing meters in autos plying in the millennium city.
The commuters will finally get some relief as several letters written to various departments had proved fruitless. Commuters had a torid time over the years as drivers charged fares at their will.
“We are planning to create an automatic service centre for autos which will enable them to get a fitness certificate after which we will install meters in the autos plying on the city roads,” TL Satyaprakash, deputy commissioner of Gurgaon, said.
The district administration has already approved the proposal for installing meters in autos and very soon commuters will be riding in autos installed with proper meters like neighbouring New Delhi.
Describing about the delay in the process Satyaprakash further said, “We are discussing the matter with the autorickshaws associations.
For the fitness test, they have to travel to a specific centre and we are not getting enough space in the city for that purpose. So we have identified a place in Manesar but the auto drivers are not willing to travel that far for fitness test as they do not want to bear the toll cost while travelling to Manesar.”
He also mentioned that very soon the department will be able to identify a suitable place in the city where these tests can be conducted. “I believe we will be able to deliver results very soon,” he added.
Although the district administration has taken up this task earnestly, Gurgaon is still far behind Delhi in installing meters in autos.
Recently, technologically advanced and tamper-proof GPS enabled meters were introduced in Delhi autorickshaws.
