When other banks were waiting for guidelines from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on the withdrawal of Rs2.5 lakh for weddings, a branch of the State Bank of India (SBI) in Gurgaon has already dispensed the cash required to 13 families.
The Mehrauli road main branch of the SBI went ahead with the dispensation after receiving directions from its head office to help those in need of cash for weddings. The bank facilitated cash withdrawal for seven applicants on Saturday and six on Monday.
The bank asked the applicants to fills forms containing details of the wedding, and submit wedding invitation from the sides of the bride and the bridegroom and their PAN cards.
The Centre had on November 17 announced that families with weddings scheduled till the end of December could withdraw up to Rs2.5 lakh cash per wedding. As people thronged the banks after the announcement, bank officials maintained wait-and watch policy as they could not operate without RBI guidelines.
A circular from the RBI reached the bank on Monday with the norms to be followed by customers to avail of the withdrawal facility for weddings. The RBI also released an application form to be filled by customers.
“We provided cash to 13 persons for wedding purposes. After receiving the RBI circular, we are handing over the guidelines to customers but no one has returned with the formalities completed,” Mukesh Kumar Sinha, chief manager of Mehrauli road branch of the SBI, said.
To mitigate the inconvenience for families with weddings scheduled, the Haryana government on November 15 directed all business houses, tent dealers, marriage and banquets halls to accept payments through cheque, demand draft, and online methods.
The decision was taken after reports that people were facing difficulties in arranging cash for weddings.
