With the arrest of one and the identification of two others on Wednesday, the police had a major breakthrough in the Manesar gangrape and murder case.

This, however, could not have been achieved without the concerted effort and assistance of the Bas Kusla village panchayat and other villagers.

The three accused in the Manesar gangrape and murder case are all residents of Rungshi village in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh. And all three were staying as tenants in the village.

“Yogender (the man who has been arrested) is my tenant and he came to me this morning and confessed to committing the heinous crime. I told Jitu Pradhan (a fellow panchayat member) about it, who then immediately called up ACP, Manesar,” Ajit Chauhan, sarpanch of Bas Kusla told HT.

The sarpanch said that Yogender also said that the two others involved in the crime were Amit and Jaikesh — both lives with Yogender in the same village.

“Yogender used to drive an auto from IMT, Manesar to Jhadsa. He had come here as a tenant on May 29 (the day the crime was committed). When Ajit told me about Yogender’s confession, my first reaction was to call the police,” Jitu Pradhan told HT.

The sarpanch and other members of the panchayat, along with villagers, had been seeking information from the landlords about their tenants, particularly those who drove auto-rickshaws or were involved in the transport service since the news about the gangrape in Manesar broke on Monday.

As Bas Kusla is home to a sizeable migrant population, with many of the migrants driving autos, the local panchayat, as well as the police, had been talking to tenants and questioning various people from the village and nearby areas regarding the incident.

Bas Kusla has over 50,000 migrant workers, mainly from north India, and about 5,000 locals.

While only one has been arrested so far, it is hoped that others would be behind the bars soon.

It has been over a week since a 19-year-old woman, also a resident of Bas Kusla, was gangraped and her eight-month-old daughter murdered on May 29 night in Sector 8, Manesar, near the police station.
