A Delhi resident, who has a criminal history, was shot dead in Sector 23A after being allegedly lured to the location by a rival gang who used a honeytrap.
The victim, Rahul Mann, 27, was shot at four times and he succumbed to a bullet injury to his chest, the police said. Mann was a member of a Delhi-based gang earlier, the police said.
Mann, the police said, was shot near gate number 5 of Sector 23A in front of The NorthCap University around 11pm. He used to work as a cab driver and lived in Alipur near Narela in Delhi, the police said.
A relative of the victim said that Rahul had made the acquaintance of a woman around 15 days ago, who allegedly called him on Tuesday evening to celebrate her birthday.
Sources said Rahul had a previous criminal record and was involved in several murder attempts under Narela and other police stations in Delhi.
Rahul borrowed a Santro car from his friend and went to Gurgaon to meet the woman but was allegedly cornered by his rivals, who orchestrated a shoot-out, sources said.
Mann’s father Suresh Chand lodged a police complaint after which a murder case was filed at Palam Vihar police station. The Palam Vihar police registered a case of murder under section 302 of the IPC and Arms Act. The Santro car has also been seized by the police.
“The victim was an erstwhile member of the Rajesh Bawania gang and had cases of murder and attempt to murder registered against him. He obviously had enemies who orchestrated the crime but the possibility of a gang war in Gurgaon is unlikely,” Sumit Kuhar, deputy commissioner of police (crime), Gurgaon, said.
Sandeep Kumar, the station house officer of Palam Vihar police station, said that two teams have been formed to investigate the case. He said, prima facie, the matter seemed to be one of personal rivalry and there is no evidence to suggest a gang war.
The body was sent for a post-mortem examination.
On February 5, a New Delhi resident was shot dead in Palam Vihar. The victim has been identified as Vikrant, 25, a resident of Baba Haridas Nagar in New Delhi. He was brought to Bajghera village in Palam Vihar in a van and gunned down. The police had identified three persons — a resident of Jhajjar and two from Najafgarh — in connection with the murder.
Gurgaon has witnessed 27 murders in 2017. On Saturday night, a woman, identified as Sudesh, was killed by assailants who had allegedly come to kill her son, Johny Hans, in Naharpur Rupa village.
