A speeding Haryana Roadways bus savagely crushed a 44-year-old cardiologist and his three-year-old daughter after the driver lost control over the vehicle outside the deceased’s residence at Rail Vihar in Sector 47, Gurgaon.
The incident took place at around 7.30 am, when Dr Pankaj Gupta, and Lineshya – a pre-nursery student of Delhi Public School, Sector 45 — were waiting for the school bus. The girl’s mother, Jyoti Gupta, 35, who was standing at the housing society’s gates, a little distance away, was unhurt, but was admitted to hospital on Monday evening after her condition deteriorated due to shock.
The horribly mangled body of the doctor, who worked at Medanta hospital, was retrieved from under the bus with the help of three cranes, which took an hour to complete the task. According to the police, the body was so badly wedged beneath the vehicle that four of their personnel had to work to extricate it.
The bus driver, Harish Singh, 32, an employee of Haryana Roadways, was arrested and booked for causing death due to rash and negligent driving. However, he secured bail from court within hours of the episode. Singh has been suspended from his job.
Dr Deepak Mathur, forensic expert at the state-run civil hospital, who conducted the post-mortem in the afternoon, said, “Dr Gupta’s body was mutilated, and not a single part was intact. The child’s abdominal organs had been damaged, and her intestines had spilled out. Both of them died on the spot.”
Apart from his wife, Dr Gupta is also survived by his seven-month-old daughter. The remains of the deceased were handed over to family members following the autopsy. Relatives said that the funeral would be held on Tuesday.
The accident happened when the errant driver, ferrying passengers from Huda City Centre Metro Station to Subhash Chowk, crossed over to the wrong side of the road while trying to negotiate a sharp curve and avoid crashing into a car.
In panic, instead of hitting the brakes, he pressed the accelerator, and mowed down Dr Gupta and his daughter, said investigating officer assistant subinspector Hari Singh. The bus dragged the doctor for 20 metres, before it came to a halt after hitting an electric pole and two trees..”
