More than 60 residents gathered to participate in the discussion to know more about mental health. Experts said that depression is a common mental disorder that affects people of all ages and from all walks of life.

The workshop was aimed at breaking the stigma associated with the mental illness in the society and the same is often held as the reason why people afflicted with mental illness take more time to recover.

The doctors said that depression is an illness which can occur because of continuous sadness. The patient also loses interest in activities that they normally enjoy. They said that one of the ways to identify if a person is afflicted with mental ailment is to assess if he/she is able to perform daily activities for a period of two weeks.

Experts suggested that this condition can be treated by ‘talking about depression’. The doctors advised people afflicted with mental ailments to talk to family members, friends or medical professionals about their condition in a bid to break down stigmas related to mental health.

Apart from stigmas, symptoms that were discussed also include loss of energy, a change in appetite, sleeping more or less, anxiety, reduced concentration, indecisiveness, restlessness, feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or hopelessness and thoughts of self-harm or suicide.
