The police on Thursday busted a gang of robbers with the arrest of five people in Gurgaon.
The arrested men have been identified as Chanderkant alias Sonu, Harish, 52, Sanjay, 31 and Rakesh, 36 — all hailing from Ahmedabad. Pramod alias Modi is from Delhi. Their sixth accomplice is yet to be arrested.
The gang had committed five robberies in the past 20 days in the Delhi-NCR region, including a R1 lakh dacoity in Gurgaon.
The men were nabbed on Thursday late evening by the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA-2) of Sector 14 when they were planning another robbery in Gurgaon’s Sector 56.
The police recovered a 9mm pistol, two live cartridges, two knives, one metal rod, a battery and a Tavera car from their possession.
The gang operated near private banks and kept a tab on people withdrawing huge amounts of money. They would split into two groups and target the victim.
“Their modus operandi was that they would chase the victim, intercept their vehicles and then provoke them to pick up a fight by saying that their car hit their vehicle,” said a police officer. After engaging the victim in an argument, the other group would run away with the bag containing money.
“People should be cautious on the roads and not get into unnecessary arguments. They should understand that many gangs operate under the same modus operandi,” said Vivek Sharma, joint commissioner of crime.
“These robbers often puncture the tryes of the vehicles parked outside banks and flee with the cash on the pretext of offering help,” said Sharma.
The men worked in Ahmedabad before they came to Delhi. One of them lost a huge amount of money in betting and took to robbing people to pay off the debt.
According to police, all the men are history-sheeters from Gujarat and have been imprisoned for dacoity and robbery in the past.
The police acted on a tip-off that five armed men were planning a dacoity at an under-construction site on Ghata Road.
