Residents of Sector 15 near Jharsa Chowk were in for a rude shock on Tuesday morning when they woke up to find their car windows completely smashed.

Nearly seven cars in the area were damaged by unidentified persons in the wee hours. While residents claimed at least 20 cars had been damaged, the police FIR mentions seven vehicles.

“I got a call informing me that some people were smashing the windows of my cars around 1.30am. The miscreants fled before we could catch them,” said Ashok Mangla, a resident. Three of Mangla’s cars — Hyundai i10, Scorpio and Honda City — were parked outside the house.

Devinder, a watchman at a construction site opposite Mangla’s house, said he had seen a man in a red T-shirt smashing the cars and alerted the neighbours. “I first heard something like a gunshot and came out on the road. When I saw a man running from one car to another smashing the windows of different cars, I called the neighbours and alerted them,” Devinder said.

Residents claimed they saw three men running with sticks in their hands. “Three people were seen near the community centre where some cars were damaged. But the offenders ran off before we could realise what was happening,” said Kunal Dagar, another resident.

“The man seemed to be in an inebriated state or disturbed. He kept going from one car to another and ran off before he could be nabbed,” said another resident.

Some residents did not lodge a police complaint assuming there won’t be any action. “I found the windows of my car smashed when I stepped out for a morning walk. A whole row of cars was damaged. What will the police do?” said Jagdish Kumar, a resident. Efforts are on to nab the accused, police said.
