A 21-year-old woman from Nagaland has alleged she was sexually assaulted by a driver, who also tried to rape her, in the moving cab she boarded from Mahipalpur in Delhi for Gurgaon on Sunday evening.

According to the victim, who works as salesgirl at the DLF Promenade Mall in Vasant Kunj, she boarded the cab from Mahipalpur at 8:25pm for Ambience Mall.

"There was no local transport available and I waited for fifteen minutes then I boarded the cab. After five minutes, the driver asked me to come to the front seat so that he could accommodate more passengers in the cab. The driver picked up a conversation with me to befriend with me and introduced himself as Manoj Yadav. He also tried to impress me saying that he owns a tour and travel company," the woman told Hindustan Times.

She got suspicious and asked the driver to stop the car but the man sped up and started molesting her.

He started molesting the victim when they crossed Rajokri, the victim thought she will get down at Toll Gate as there would be traffic congestion but unfortunately she could not manage to.

When she resisted he threatened to kill her, she said.

“Somehow I managed to blow his car’s horn again and again and tried to manoeuvre the steering wheel. Meanwhile my phone kept ringing and he tried to snatch my bag. In the scuffle, I somehow managed to unlock the car and jump out at Shankar Chowk flyover, said victim.

The victim escaped but suffered injuries all over her body and was rushed to a private hospital by passers-by and was later discharged after first aid.

Her bag along with her mobile phone, which is still responding, was left behind in the cab.

She also alleged she had to call the North East Support Centre and Helpline (NESCH) after no one helped her out at the DLF City Phase 3 police station, a charge which the Gurgaon police denied.

Bruce K Thangkhal, media in charge of NESCH, said, “It was only after I informed DCP (east) Nazneen Bhasin that the case was registered. Her statement was recorded at 4am on Monday when the incident took place on Sunday night.”

The Gurgaon Police has registered a case under sections 354 (molestation), 506 (threatening for life), 342 (wrongful confinement), 323 (assault) and 379 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code, though the accused is yet to be identified.

Inspector Naveen Kumar, SHO DLF City phase-2 police station said, “We have registered the case. We have recorded victim’s statement and she did not allege attempt to rape in her statement. The incident took place in a moving car and we have registered the case under appropriate sections of IPC. The mobile number is set on surveillance and soon driver will be arrested”.
